65' Hybrid Ferry

3rd Hybrid Ferry for Savannah
Chatham Area Transit, Savannah, GA, has contracted to build a 3rd 65 ft. hybrid passenger ferry for its Savannah River fleet. The vessel was designed by DeJong & Lebet, Inc., Naval Architects, Jacksonville, FL and is being built by Derecktor Shipyard, Mamaroneck, NY. The vessel is USCG certificated under Subchapter T and has a capacity of 150 passengers plus 2 crew on protected waters. The vessel has a beam of 22’ and a draft of 3’-9”. The new ferry is nearly identical to two vessels built at Derecktor and designed by DeJong & Lebet that were delivered earlier this year, but with some design improvements from the first two ferries.
The vessel features include a main deck enclosed seating area with AC (11 tons) and heat and forward boarding area on the main deck. The pilothouse is located on the 2nd Deck.
The twin hull vessel is constructed of welded aluminum.
The ferry is powered by a BAE Systems hybrid electric propulsion system with a pair of Cummins variable speed diesel generator sets developing 200 kW each, and a pair of Lithium-ion battery banks with a capacity of 196 kW-hr each . The 250 HP electric propulsion motors drive jet drive units furnished by MJP Ultrajet. The hybrid electric system also provides power to run the house loads.
The ferry carries 800 gallons of fuel.
