M/V "PLAYA DEL CARMEN DeJong & LEBET, INC. designs passenger vessel for service in Mexico.
In August, 1983, the Jacksonville Naval Architectural firm of DeJong St Lebet, Inc. signed a contract with Transportes Maratimos de Yucatan y del Caribe, S.A. to design a 121 X 27 Xli - 600 passenger ferry boat, to provide fast service between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, in Mexico. A combined effort with St. Augustine Trawlers, Inc., a St. Augustine, Florida based shipbuilder resulted in a mid-November delivery. The vessel was further designed to receive passengers from visiting cruise ships while at anchor at sea. Special hull construction and a high degree of maneuverability make this operation possible in complete safety under most sea conditions. Powered by three GM 12 V 92TA engines rated at 600 shp each, the vessel obtained the required cruising speed of 15.7 knots. Major characteristics, Equipments and Suppliers are as follows:
The vessel has a fully air conditioned pilot house and VIP room on the upper deck with seating for eighteen. Cold drinks are served from a bar in the forward part of the main deck lounge and a fully air conditioned shop below decks is stocked with souvenirs.
